Adapted from Style Me Pretty Living: How to Plan a Backyard Dinner Party
Longer days and warmer evenings invite alfresco dining and relaxed outdoor entertaining. A backyard dinner party can be anything from casual to refined, but the most memorable nights are those spent with good friends, refreshing cocktails, and thoughtfully prepared food. Whether you have a small patio or a spacious garden, a few simple choices will make your gathering feel effortless and intentional.
I love sourcing ingredients from my own garden—fresh herbs, leafy greens, and seasonal vegetables grow quickly and abundantly, and are perfect for feeding a crowd. Using what’s at hand not only tastes better, it helps keep the menu light and affordable while highlighting the season.
When entertaining outdoors, you don’t need everything to be formal. Some of my favorite gatherings have included simple disposable plates paired with pretty glassware and personal touches that make the evening feel special. Small additions—like writing guests’ names on glasses, tying herb sprigs onto napkins, or arranging flowers from the yard—create a welcoming, curated table without a lot of fuss. Natural elements such as fresh herbs, foraged greens, and organic floral arrangements help tie the look together and keep the scene feeling relaxed yet cohesive.
I once adorned kumquat branches with guests’ names written in copper ink, which paired beautifully with copper mule mugs and brass flatware. For very casual dinners, bamboo flatware accented with a strip of washi tape becomes both a playful detail and a functional piece of decor. Little DIY touches like these draw attention to elements that are normally overlooked and make the table feel thoughtfully styled.
When styling a table, think convenience first.
Choose tableware and glassware with the flow of the evening in mind. If you expect people to be up and mingling, delicate champagne coupes may not be the best fit. Simplify where possible: opt for versatile glasses and dinnerware that survive a busy evening, and remove items that won’t be used. Practical choices keep the mood relaxed and prevent the table from feeling cluttered with unnecessary pieces.
Plan a light menu with fresh ingredients
Aiming for a lighter, fresher menu makes outdoor dining more enjoyable—especially in warm weather. Rather than a heavy BBQ spread, consider shopping at the local farmers’ market and building a farm-to-table style menu. In-season fruits and vegetables are flavorful and cost-effective, and multiple shareable salads can be both satisfying and visually appealing. Serve a leafy green salad alongside a composed vegetable salad with grilled seasonal produce. Add a simple protein, a loaf of crusty bread, and a few small plates or spreads to round out the meal.
Keep flavors bright and seasonal: citrus, fresh herbs, and light vinaigrettes lift dishes and pair beautifully with refreshing beverages. For drinks, offer a signature cocktail and a nonalcoholic option—both served in sturdy glasses—to accommodate all guests and make pouring easy throughout the night.
Pick a party theme and stick to it
Having a clear theme keeps decisions easy and ensures a cohesive result. Themes can be minimal—a color palette, a single featured ingredient, or a focus on a type of cheese or herb. When one element is chosen to shine, the rest of the table should complement it rather than compete. For example, if a patterned table linen is the centerpiece, pull colors from that fabric for florals, napkins, and accent pieces so everything feels intentionally matched.
Execution matters more than complexity. A restrained approach—limited colors, natural textures, and a few standout items—feels elegant without requiring hours of work. Let one element lead and let supporting pieces cheer it on.
